Weekly Progress Update
Game Studies Progress Update Report
Week 1
April 21, 2025 – April 27, 2025
Introduction & Team Formation
We kicked off the module by receiving our project brief. Our task is to design an educational board game in collaboration with the School of Biosciences, centered around the topic of glucose pathways.
Lecture Guidance
Dr. Luqman gave an insightful session on how to approach the design process creatively, guiding us on the kind of gameplay mechanics that could complement scientific learning.
Dr. Anis delivered a lecture introducing the fundamentals of game studies, exploring how games function as systems and how play connects with learning.
Our Team
After that, we quickly formed a group with students at the same table.
Melanie Wong Yuen Mun
The Mechanic
Designs how the game works and ensures everything plays smoothly
Syarifah Mia Tasha Binti Syed Adeli
The Crafter
Turns raw materials into polished playables.
Lee Xin Yi, Cindy (me)
The Playtester
Tries things out, spots bugs & gives feedback
ViineshKumar A/L Murugan
The Face of the Game
Represents the team and pitches the game.
Minal Khalid
The Supporter
Provides moral support, helps when needed
Week 2
April 28, 2025 – May 4, 2025
Initial Concepts
After a week of briefing, we eventually came up with 4 game ideas. My concept is a board game inspired by Monopoly named GlycubeConquest, designed to teach biological concepts through strategic gameplay.
Week 3
May 5, 2025 – May 11, 2025
Play Week
This is the week where we were allowed to play board games without any class for Game Studies. To gain inspiration for our initial game concepts, we played a few board games like UNO cards.

Week 4
May 12, 2025 – May 18, 2025
Concept Finalization
Among 4 concepts, we chose "Daily Life~", designed by Melanie, as the finalized idea and proposed it to Dr. Adeline. We received insightful suggestions on how to improve our proposed board game, "Daily Life~" which apparently contains unbalance mechanics and with a less attractive name for the game.

Week 5
May 19, 2025 – May 25, 2025
Game Presentation
After implementing the suggestions from last week, we presented our board game with a whole new look -- SUGAR HIGH! With a more clear and balanced mechanics compared to the last version.
Week 6
May 26, 2025 – June 1, 2025
Pre-Alpha Playtest
This week is our first time actually playing our designed game among ourselves after implementing the changes. It was fun as I got to learn more about our game's mechanics and also realizing some tricks to win the game. We recorded our findings into the mechanics review.
Week 7
June 2, 2025 – June 8, 2025
Alpha Playtest
This week is alpha playtest where one of our members, Viinesh pitched our game while the rest of us had the chance to try out other group's game.
We got the opportunity to try out group 2's designed game, Glucose Conquest. Their proposed game is a 10-round board game where players compete to gather the most "troops" while movement is determined by dice rolls.
Coincidently, we played at Table 2, and most of us kept rolling twos—some said it was the table’s curse! Overall, it is a playful experience, Minal won first place while I'm the 1st runner up, without harming others and playing peacefully. I've already identified strategies I can use next time!
On the other hand, we got recommendations from group 2 after playing our game where they filled in the mechanics review for our game.
Week 8
June 9, 2025 – June 15, 2025
Beta Playtest Preparation
This week we prepared our prototype. At that time, our prototype was ready for pitching. Mia have also made a lovely box as a container for our card game.
Week 9
June 16, 2025 – June 22, 2025
Final Iteration
This week was the last call for changes of the game, we had an online session with Dr.Anis presenting our findings from week 6 and week 7. We were suggested to make a comprehensive full guide for our game. Other than that, there were no major changes to the game mechanics.
Week 10
June 23, 2025 – June 29, 2025
Continuation of asset development
Other than the full guide, our game assets were done.
Week 11
June 30, 2025 – July 6, 2025
Finalization of asset development
The full guide along with other game assets were done.
Week 12
July 7, 2025 – July 13, 2025
Beta Playtest
Viinesh pitched our game to the Bioscience School, while the rest of us playtested Group 2’s game and provided feedback on their newly introduced mechanics. From what we heard, the Bioscience students seemed to enjoy playing our game as their gameplay went smoothly.
Week 13
July 14, 2025 – July 20, 2025
Hybrid Session
This week we compiled all feedback gathered since Week 6, including responses from the Bioscience students, and analyzed key areas for future improvement.
Week 14
July 21, 2025 – July 27, 2025
Final Presentation
This is the last class for our module where we had our final presentation showcasing the completed version of "Sugar High" and discussed about our findings throughout the whole iteration process.
